Once a major port, Inhambane is one of the oldest settlements on the East Coast. Founded by Vasco da Gama in 1534 it was the most southerly slave port used by the Arabs. Discover colonial architecture, working dhows and local markets. Or head to the various coastal areas. To the north, you can enjoy the pretty beaches of Bazaruto and Quirimbas Archipelagos. Barra – a remote beach with horse riding, kayak and sailing opportunities – and Tofo – a rather basic village – are located on the peninsular to the east. Both offer great conditions for divers interested in pelagics. Humpback whales can be spotted from July to November whilst whale sharks can be seen all year round .
