Dating back to the 6th century, and taking between 500 and 600 years to build, the citadel of Kuelap has now been overtaken by jungle but still remains remarkably intact and gives a very clear picture of the way in which the Chachapoya people once lived. Chiclayo (part 3/4) Chachapoyas 4D/3N w/ Revash night in Leymebamba

Starting early in the morning, take an hour’s drive to Yerba Buena – the starting point of your day’s adventure. From here, head high up on horseback into the lush green mountains to the remote marvel of Revash – a funerary complex built into the sheer rock face of a steep sided canyon. Dating from around the 14th century these funeral mansions are built in a straight line along a narrow hall that was shaped by the cavity excavated in the rocky wall of the imposing canyon. They remain almost intact except for the mummies located inside, which were destroyed by looters and pillaged long ago. Afterwards, return to Leymebamba for lunch and a fascinating tour of Leymebamba museum, where over 200 mummies and their burial offerings were recovered from the Laguna de los Condores. Discover the different ways in which the Chacahapoya and Incans used to honor and preserve their relatives and marvel at just how intact these thousands of years old skeletons still are.
