Although Trujillo is less frequented, it is certainly as interesting as Chiclayo. Not far from here lies the largest pre-Columbian city in the whole of South America: Chan Chan and other minor but important temple complexes. Away from tourist swarms, Trujillo delivers insights into the cultural diversity of this region, dating back more than 2,000 years.

Tour the impressive El Brujo Archaeological Complex. Located along the coast, Huaca El Brujo and Huaca Cao Viejo were built by the Moche people sometime between 1 and 600 AD and are famed for the polychrome reliefs and mural paintings. A well-preserved mummy was recently found here, indicating the matriarchal traits of the bygone culture that once called this place home.
