The climate in Mauritius is tropical. Temperatures on the island are relatively constant during the year and the rainfall is distributed evenly over the year. There are two seasons in Mauritius.
The best travel time for your Mauritius vacation is in the winter. The most comfortable temperatures are from September to January, when the weather is mild and the temperatures pleasant if you are seeking a more active vacation. If you are planning a pure beach holiday in Mauritius, we recommend the months October to March.
January is a popular time to visit Mauritius due to New Year festivities but be prepared for rain and, even cyclones. In fact, it is one of the wettest months of the year. It is also one of the warmest times of the year with average daytime highs in the mid-80s.

With the crowds gone and a high chance of rain, it is a slow period in the island nation. Summer temperatures continue in February with average highs around 86°F and lows around 72°F. Humidity is high and there is still a chance of cyclones hitting the region.

The trend of hot, humid and wet weather continues in March. The possibility of cyclones remains though it is less compared to February. Sea temperatures are a pleasant 82°F. The Indian diaspora welcomes spring season with the colorful Holi festival.

It’s the last month of summer with temperatures showing a slight drop. Cyclones are uncommon in April though the month experiences some rain in the form of short-lived thunderstorms. The northern and western parts of the island are the driest.

May is one of the best months to travel to Mauritius with dry, sunny weather, for the most part, and fewer crowds. Day time high is around 80°F and humidity is also manageable. There is a chance of rain though spells are light and short.

It is the start of winter in Mauritius though average high temperatures are still around at a pleasant 77°F. Dry, sunny days are accompanied by low humidity levels and warm sea temperatures. Nighttime lows are in the low 60s so it is advisable to carry a warm layer or two to cover up once the sun goes down.

The holiday crowd descends on the beaches during the month of August. Sunny skies, moderate weather and lower levels of humidity make August one of the best times to visit Mauritius. Average highs are around 74°F – 77°F and average lows hover around 61°F – 64°F.

The weather in Mauritius starts to warm up once again beginning September. The trade winds die down during the month with average high temperatures around 76°F and lows slowly creeping up to 66°F.

Best time to visit Mauritius by season
During the winter, it is relatively dry, whereas in the summer there can often be heavy precipitation and tropical storms. The temperature on the coastal areas varies between 71°F in winter and 93°F in summer. The sea temperature varies between 71°F and 81°C. The best time for diving is between November and April, when the sea is at its calmest. The North and West coasts are the best areas for diving enthusiasts as these are the most sheltered.

What to Pack
While beachwear is of paramount importance on your Mauritius vacation – think swimwear, sunscreen, sunhats, sunglasses, flipflops, shorts, sarongs, mosquito repellent – do note that some hotels do have a dress code that calls for semi-formal/formal wear as well. So make sure you have slacks, dresses, formal trousers, shirts and dress shoes. Do carry rainwear such as a waterproof jacket.
