Best Time to Visit Myanmar

What is the best time to visit Myanmar? Our destination experts share an overview on when to visit the various regions of Myanmar.

Myanmar is truly like a place frozen in time! Cruise along the mighty Ayeyarwaddy River, go hot air ballooning over the ancient plains of Bagan, go in search of the elusive tiger on elephant back, or enjoy mountain trekking and rafting, and when in the mood for some adrenalin rush, indulge in some world class diving in the Mergui Archipelago.

The ideal time for traveling throughout Myanmar is winter, from mid-October to mid-February, with an average temperature of 20-24°C. Some regions in upper Myanmar have a temperature ranging between 5–10°C. The rainy season (monsoon) is from mid-May to mid-October with an average temperature of 25-30° C. Although it rains heavily in Yangon and Inle Lake, traveling in Myanmar during this season is still enjoyable because Mandalay and Bagan lies in rather dry zone where it rarely rains. The hot season (summer) is from mid-February to mid-May, with an average temperature of 30-35°C.

Plains (Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay, Ngapali):

  • High season: November – March
  • Low season: April – October
  • Restricted to: May, July – September

Tip: In the high season, it will be warm to hot so carry light clothes, cotton and linen, with a light jacket for mild evenings. A good sunscreen (SPF 30+) and sunglasses are also essential. Between June to September, carry rain gear including an umbrella, jacket, and some light-weight shoes. In the winter months between December and January, temperatures dip to between 15 – 20 º C so take a warm jacket, some light sweaters and a light wool cap if you’d like additional protection.

Higher regions (Inle Lake, Kyaing Tong, Hsipaw, Kalaw, Pyin Oo Lwin):

  • Main season: November, March – April
  • Low season: July – October, December – February
  • Restricted to: May – June

Tip: Carry layers, with a t-shirt for the day and a sweater for the late evenings. Carry sunscreen, sunglasses and hiking boots for long trails.
