Thakhek is the capital of the Khammouane province in central Laos and is located on the banks of the mighty Mekong River that forms the boundary between Laos and Thailand. Once a colonial settlement, the city’s French heritage is evident in the many charming official buildings, villas and shops that line the streets of the old town. The town is known for its bustling local market which sells almost everything under the sun – from items of daily necessity to snakes, frogs, and several other types of food and wares!
