Flores is one of the oldest inhabited towns in the Americas. The original island town of Nojpetén was built in the 13th century by the Mayan Itza on Lake Peten Itza (or Lago de Petén Itzá). Nojpetén was later colonized by the Spanish in the late 17th century. Today, the modern city of Flores straddles the old island town as well as its twin city of Santa Elena on the mainland, and the municipality of San Benito that stretches out to the west. Santa Elena is the more modern part of town. The old town has a quaint charm of its own with terraced houses and parts of the waterfront promenade overlooking the Lake Peten Itza.
