Stroll through the magnificent gardens the palace and marvel at the world-famous system of fountains, including the superlative Grand Cascades, installed by Empress Elizabeth. Ravaged by invading German soldiers in WW2, Peterhof was soon rebuilt and the Lower Park opened to the public in 1945, while the facades of the Grand Palace were restored in 1952, and today you can explore Peterhof in all its former Imperial grandeur. As you walk between its hallowed walls, marvel at the intricate mosaic work that contributed to the building’s total cost of 4.5 million rubles. The focal point of the church is the shrine, built over the very spot the Emperor was assassinated, embellished with semi-precious stones like topaz and laurite. Next, make your way to St Isaac’s Cathedral in downtown St Petersburg, with its beautiful gilded dome, the cupola of which is often visible from miles away. An imposing structure, with red granite columns that weigh 80 tons each, the cathedral contains many elaborate mosaics and pieces of art. Steeped in the rich history of the Romanov dynasty, the cathedral’s secrets are revealed by your knowledgeable guide.
