The spectacular site of Ait-Ben-Haddou is yours to discover on this half day trip to a UNESCO World Heritage landmark. Located in the southern foothills of the High Atlas in the province of Ouarzazate, the historic structure of Ait-Ben-Haddou is built as a ksar, a pre-Saharan, fortified group of dwellings native to southern Morocco. Thread your way through the red mud houses that get its vivid hue from dark red pisé and some of which still sport traditional decorations. Soak in the exotic setting which has made many a Hollywood movie come alive and is best captured by your camera under the slanting rays of the sun. Films such as Lawrence of Arabia(1962), The Living Daylights (1987), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), The Mummy (1999), Gladiator (2000), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), Kundun (1997), Legionnaire (1998), Hanna(2011),The Hills Have Eyes (2006), and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2011) were shot here, as was part of the TV series Game of Thrones. Veer off the beaten path in Morocco to the remote oasis of Tafraoute nestled in the rocky Ameln Valley. Drive south from your hotel towards the coast to the National Park of Souss Massa, home to rich flora and over 250 species of birds such as the bald ibis and red-necked ostrich. Pass the town of Tiznit, well known for its traditional Berber silver jewelry. Wind your way through rugged terrain along the Anti Atlas ranges spotting herds of goats munching nuts on argan trees. Reach the Berber heartland of Tafraoute, discovered by traveler hippies in the 1960s, now a beautiful cluster of minarets and pink low rise houses.
