Jakarta

2 Days

Set on the northwest coast of Java, the capital city of Jakarta boasts millennia of history, tracing its roots back to a fourth century Hindu kingdom. Modern day Jakarta is a melting pot of culture and cuisine.

Included Activities

Evening Tour of Old Jakarta with Traditional Dance and dinner
Discover the traditional heart of this vibrant city on a leisurely evening tour. You will start off by exploring China Town, which is one of the oldest parts of the city. The tour includes a visit to Jakarta’s original downtown area of Old Batavia, with its handsome historical buildings from the colonial era. Batavia or Djakarta was the capital of the Dutch East Indies from the 17th to the 20th centuries. You could stop by the Art Market next, to interact with local artists while scouting for traditional Indonesian paintings, wood carvings and other artefacts. If the weather permits, you may even catch an open air performance or a beautiful sunset from the Bay of Jakarta. Wind up your day by dining at a traditional restaurant. Sample typical Indonesian fare while watching traditional dancers perform in their classical costumes. (Half Day, Private Activity & Transfer; Fitness Level: Moderate).

Highlights of Jakarta
Discover Jakarta’s rich historical past with this full-day city tour of monuments that reflect the national spirit. As a fitting tribute to its history as an important trading center, you will begin the day with a boat ride around the waterfront. Relive the arrival of Portuguese and Dutch traders as you visit the old harbour. The Sunda Kelapa Harbour lies at the head of Batavia, just across the old 17th century drawbridge. From a colonial past to landmarks of modern Indonesia, drop by the National Monument and the National Museum next. Appreciate the land’s multi-cultural heritage by catching the excellent displays and artefacts at the Museum. Reflect on the multi-religious practices of this ancient land with a visit to the largest mosque in Southeast Asia—the Istiqlal Mosque, which is also the National Mosque of Indonesia. Right next door stands the Jakarta Cathedral, built in the neo-gothic style. (Full Day, Private Activity & Transfer; Fitness Level: Moderate; National Museum Closed on Mondays and Public Holidays)

Borobudur

1 Day

Borobudur is considered the garden of Java, due to its agricultural heritage and timeless fertile lands. Borobudur is most famed for its ancient 9th century Mahayana Buddhist temple, located on a hill between the twin volcanoes of Sundoro-Sumbing and Merbabu-Merapi, and next to Progo River and Elon River.

Included Activities

Borobudur Temple Sunrise Visit
Awake early to take the short drive to the famous Borobudur Temple, which many say rivals Cambodia’s Angkor Wat! This famous 9th century temple is the largest Buddhist temple in the world. This giant pyramid structure was based on an ancient text and took about one hundred years to be completed and old documents suggest it was inaugurated in 824 AD. Rising up from the green plains in a similar shape to its neighbouring volcanoes, it is a most marvellous setting to watch the sunrise, although there is quite a climb up its six tiers to reach the top. However, reaching the top is well worth it as you will find 72 small latticework stupas that each house a Buddha. Once you have witnessed the beautiful, tranquil views, head back to your hotel for breakfast.(Half Day; Private activity & transfers; start from hotel: 4.30-5 am; Travel time to activity: 15 mins; Duration: 3 hrs; Fitness level: Easy to moderate, as you will have to climb up 100 gentle steps to the temple; Please note that views can be obstructed during cloudy or rainy weather.)

Learn about the flora and fauna of the jungle as your guide enlightens you about the medicinal value of the plants found in the region and the purpose of the old Bohorok Orangutan Center, which was originally set up to help conserve and rehabilitate the fast dwindling population of the great apes. Although the center is no longer operational with all the orangutans released into the wild, forest rangers continue their watch over the fragile population. Be on a lookout for popular Orangutan, ‘Ucok’ or ‘Mina’, as well as Thomas Leaf Monkeys and the Sumatran Striped Rabbit. Return to your hotel for lunch after the jungle safari.
