Explore the best of North Island driving southwards from your hotel in Auckland through the agricultural lands of Waikato to Waitomo. Take a boat ride through the magical Glowworm Caves, an ancient cave network home to a species known as Arachnocampa Luminosa – exclusive to New Zealand. Marvel at the natural light display and listen to old legends as you glide silently along the cave. Next, set off to discover J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional Middle-earth with a tour around the fascinating Hobbiton movie set located on a picturesque private farmland. Revisit all your favorite moments and locations from The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit series as you experience the intricate details of The Shire. Set out to Rotorua set on a lake by the same name, and known for its geothermal activity and Maori culture. After lunch at a cafe, enjoy a soak in bubbling mud pools and natural hot springs. Visit a living Maori village and the Maori Arts and Crafts Institute for a flavor of the rich local heritage. Heading out of Rotorua in the morning, explore the pristine natural surroundings at the Otanewainuku forest enroute Tauranga. Enjoy leisurely loop walks, traversing well-marked trails in this lush virgin forest nestled above the Mamaku Plateau. As you soak in the giant Rimu canopy punctuated with native ferns and shrubs, expect to spot a variety of birdlife including the kiwi, and a few small animals. Break for lunch at a local Kiwi café, and enjoy traditional Maori favorites. Later, continue to Pāpāmoa on the eastern coast in the Bay of Plenty, and visit Todd Couper, a contemporary New Zealand artist. Admire his works created in the style of, the traditional Māori wood carving style of whakairo, and bronze sculptures, which are found in private collections across the world. Interacting with him, get a glimpse into the processes that are inspired by his childhood and local culture. Settle into your comfortable land cruiser for the drive along the shores of Lake Wakatipu as you set out to discover the beautiful environs of Milford. Journey past the southern farmlands to Lake Te Anau stopping for a short tea break along the way. Head into Fiordland National Park and the Eglinton Valley stopping at the Mirror Lakes boardwalk, Knobs Flat, The Divide, Monkey Creek through to the Cleddau Valley along Milford Road which affords excellent opportunities for great photography. Savor stunning views of the scenic landscape as you travel under the mountain through the 1.2 km Homer Tunnel. Nearly 4,000 feet (11200 m) long, this passageway carved into solid rock, lets you cross the main divide of the Southern Alps to reach Milford Sound. The last stop before Milford is The Chasm viewing the 22 metre deep ravine carved by the Cleddau River. Hop aboard the Cruise Milford and relax as the vessel floats along the fiord to the Tasman Sea, past spectacular waterfalls, craggy rock faces, and Mitre Peak. Watch out for the scenic landmarks that your captain points out as you relish a delectable buffet lunch onboard. Step off the boat and enjoy your drive back to Queenstown enjoying views of Sandfly Point, Lake Quill, Sutherland Falls, the Southern Alps, Lake Wakatipu, and Walter Peak along the way.
