Cenote Xkeken near Valladolid
Descend a flight of stone steps into a limestone cavern
to take a dip in the cool waters of Cenote Xkeken, an
atmospheric underground sinkhole near Valladolid, not far
from Cancún. A small opening at the top of the cave allows a
beam of light to stream in, illuminating the turquoise waters
and creating a soft, celestial glow. Swimming beneath this
canopy of stalactites is a surreal experience.
VIETNAM
Cu Chi Tunnels
Expanded during the Vietnam War, the Cu Chi Tunnels are a
vast underground network that once stretched for over 155
miles. This hand-dug labyrinth served as a hidden world for
Viet Cong fighters and civilians, housing supply routes, living
quarters, and makeshift medical stations. Today, visitors can
crouch and crawl through narrow corridors and experience
the claustrophobic reality of wartime life lived underground.
It is a sobering, hands-on testament to human ingenuity and
the sheer will to survive against impossible odds.
