The castle was once the site of the ancient Greek port of Antipolis and later a Roman fort. The present castle was built in 1309 and called Grimaldi Castle after its owners, the reigning princely family of Monaco. In the late 18th century, it became the citys town hall and then an art gallery in 1925. In the fall of 1946, Pablo Picasso, co-founder of Cubism, used a room in the chteau as his studio for a few months. During his stay, he produced 23 paintings and 44 drawings, which he donated to the museum. Over the years, additional works by Picasso donated to the museum greatly added to the collection. Most notable are his paintings La Joie de Vivre, La Chevre, and Satyr, Faun and Centaur with Trident. The Picasso Museum also has ceramic pieces made by the artist, including sculptures, wall plates, dishes, vases, and tiles. Besides Picassos works, the museum has on permanent display works by renowned artists like Nicolas de Stal, Hans Hartung, and Anna-Eva Bergman. The sea-facing terrace, with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean, has an open-air sculpture gallery.enchantingtravels.com/antibes22 \x1a BE ENCHANTED'
