Aberdeen stands at the confluence of Scotland’s legendary Dee and Don rivers, along the chilly shores of the North Sea. The extensive use of the region’s local gray granite in the city’s architecture has also earned it the moniker of ‘Granite City’. The striking granite complex of the Aberdeen Maritime Museum and the typical Victorian buildings of the Aberdeen Art Gallery and the Marischal College are fine examples. Home to the medieval University of Aberdeen and the more recent Robert Gordon University, the city is also northern Scotland’s university town. The city’s extensive, sandy coastline and its large green spaces and public gardens like Duthie Park offer travelers a taste of Scotland’s natural beauty. The 17th century Craigiever Castle with its stone turrets and the royal residence of Balmoral Castle reminds us of the rich historical heritage of this part of the world.
Aberdeen is also a perfect base for visiting Dunnottar Castle to the south, and for exploring Scotland’s whisky country, which lies to the northwest.
