Central America through the seasons
Central america is a huge region of spectacular scenic diversity. From the rainforests of Guatemala to the mountains and volcanoes of Costa Rica, and the Barrier Reef of Belize, there is so much to see.
However in order to make the most of your visit, it can be crucial to make sure you pick the best time to visit Central America. The climate can vary greatly depending on where you are (even if you’re in the same country). The seasons in Central America can be massively different to what you may be used to in the northern hemisphere, so research is important.
Generally speaking, the climate in Central America isn’t very diverse. It tends to be warm all year, with tropical or subtropical humidity, and frequent downpours during the wetter seasons. The only real seasonal difference is that some months experience much greater rainfall than others.
We recommend visiting Central America during the dry seasons. Most interestingly, the warmer and drier seasons in South America occur during the winter season in the northern hemisphere, running from November to April.
So if you want to avoid the wetness and coldness of winter, fly south!
As with anywhere else, the higher above sea level you go, the cooler you’ll find the weather.
Costa Rica
Costa Rica has a wonderfully tropical climate throughout the year, thanks to its proximity to the equator. However, there are some differences in weather and climate depending on where you are. So a good rule of thumb is to keep in mind that the higher you go the cooler it is.

Guatemala
Guatemala’s proximity to the equator naturally leads to very little seasonal variation. In fact, Guatemala has only two seasons – the rainy season and the dry season, with the latter being the recommended time to visit the country.

Mexico
Mexico is a year-round destination for vacations, thanks to its location on the Tropic of Cancer. The one thing to watch out for while planning your visit is cyclone season, which brings heavy rainfall to some parts.
