Enjoy a ride across the Thai countryside on an overnight train from Ayutthaya to Chiang Mai. Board the train at Ayutthaya’s Train station, Ho Rattanachai..located in Phranakhon Sri Ayutthaya, just across the river from the town centre. The station is served by the Northern and the Northeastern Lines, servicing 77 trains per day, with an estimated 10,000-12,000 people passing through daily. The journey takes about 11.5hrs (overnight), but invariably gets delayed. Arrive next day at Chiang Mai Train Station, located on the east bank of the Ping River (abt 2.5km east of the old city). A long distance service includes First Class travel – Private cabins for 2 persons with a lower and upper bed; air-conditionning 24×7; a little water fountain, and each compartment has its own wash basin. Food and drinks can be purchased on board, while room service is often available on select services. Alternatively, Second Class travel provides upholstered seats which convert into bunks; a shared bogey for 4 persons per cabin with a lower and upper bed, clean sheets and curtains for privacy. Food and drinks can be purchased on board. Highly advisable to carry a good book, playing cards, an ipod, and perhaps a game of scrabble/board game. However, the flip-side is that toilets are shared in both Classes.
