Explore the vibrant city at your own pace! There’s much to see in one of Australia’s most cosmopolitan cities. You could begin your day to the sound of native bird songs emanating from Forgotten Songs, a public art installation of birdcage speakers at Angel Place. If you are in the mood for a meal, head to The Grounds of Alexandria – a whimsical wonderland of cafes, stalls, farm animals and neon lights. You can admire street art at Kimber Lane and Newtown, where you can score vintage finds, and if you’re feeling adventurous, explore the underground tunnels featuring WWII graffiti, via the St James Station. Sample a slice of local life if you please, on bush walks and picnics at the leafy Balls Head Reserve and the Hermitage Foreshore Walk. Ayers Rock/ Uluru

A millennia-old monolith, Ayers Rock rises dramatically from the flat desert landscape and forms the heartland of Aboriginal Australia or the ‘Red Centre’. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the area around the rock is known for its natural springs, waterholes, and Aboriginal art. Uluru and all the other rocky domes (or ‘Olgas’) dotting Australia’s arid and dusty bushland are part of the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and form the religious and cultural core of the indigenous Australian population. A visit to the region affords one with the chance to observe the changing colors of this magnificent natural formation. Climbing is sometimes permitted, but not during local ceremonies and funerals.

Experience a magical sunrise at Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock. Wake up very early in the morning and drive to the UNESCO World Heritage site. Accompanied by your guide, head to a vantage point, and watch the sunrise over the imposing sandstone monolith. Board your economy class flight from Ayers Rock to Cairns (Flight duration: 2.5 hrs).

A paradise for nature lovers, Cairns is the gateway to one of our planet’s most precious natural resources, one that is even visible from outer space, the Great Barrier Reef! The port city attracts all shades of divers and marine life enthusiasts from around the world. A busy cruise ship port, its harbors are teeming with vessels ranging from luxury liners to local reef boats. After a day of scuba diving or snorkeling by the coral reef, hang out at the city’s laidback Esplanade lagoon or the Pier marina with its lively bars and restaurants. Home to the local Yirrganydji and Yidinji communities, Cairns also has much to offer by way of culture, what with local island music and colorful dance performances. Visit the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park for storytelling sessions on indigenous Aboriginal and islander communities. The Daintree National Park with its lush highland rainforest and beaches is another favorite tourist destination.

Drive yourself from Cairns to Port Douglas in your rental car (Duration: 1.5 hrs)

Port Douglas

There’s something for every kind of traveler at tropical Port Douglas. Thanks to its proximity to the Great Barrier Reef, this remote port on the Coral Sea has transformed into a vibrant vacation spot over the years. Once home to the local Yirrganydji community, this region to the north of Queensland has outgrown its fishing village roots. From beachcombers to nature lovers to those in need of a little retail therapy, the beautiful beaches and boulevards of this resort town beckon them all. One of the star attractions of this charming town is the Daintree National Park, the world’s oldest rainforest and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Angling and sightings of saltwater crocs are spectacular at the Dickson Inlet as are spottings of koalas and other animals at the Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas. Explore the biodiverse Daintree rainforest region on this tour. You will be picked up from your hotel in Port Douglas and driven to scenic Mossman Gorge.
