Bogota

Set at an altitude of over 2,000 meters in Colombia’s Eastern Andean range, Bogota boasts wonderful highland climate and natural beauty. The capital of Columbia is dotted with numerous national monuments and cultural landmarks, befitting the pulsating core of an ancient land that was periodically rediscovered by empires over the centuries. Long before the Spanish Conquistadors arrived on its shores, in search of the elusive El Dorado, the grand Muisca Empire ruled the highland valleys around modern day Santa Fe de Bogotá. Today, the ancient works of art tracing the El Dorado legends, displayed at the city’s Gold Museum, attract travellers from around the globe. The Plaza de Bolívar right in the center of town is representative of the region’s rich cultural heritage with its grand old churches, cloistered convents, and painstakingly preserved colonial architecture. Cerro Monserrate to the east, offers the highest vantage point over the city and the lush mountains towering around it. The modern city, meanwhile, has spread northwards, to the tony neighborhoods of Zona Rosa and Zona G with its trendy eateries and nightclubs.

Included activities

Visit the famous museum housing the priceless works of contemporary artist, Fernando Botero; and admire the gold collection of the ancient Muisca Empire in the Gold Museum. Scenic Treasures Tour from Bogota

After a scenic drive from Bogota, explore the underground Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá, created inside a former salt mine. Walk the ‘Way of the Cross’ represented by a collection of chapels showcasing noteworthy moments from Jesus’ life. Accompanied by your guide, expect to see hollowed-out crosses and altars built by erstwhile miners who prayed for their safety. Further ahead, marvel at the magnificent salt cupola, naves of the main cathedral and the lofty carved cross, all illuminated by eerie blue lights. Later, head to the charming Guatavita town through the picturesque Cundinamarca countryside. Visit its submerged old town nearby, which is now a reservoir famous for water sports. Hike to the pristine Lake Guatavita, embraced by a beautiful nature reserve. As you traverse forest trails passing by highland vegetation, learn about the former sacred site of the indigenous Musica people, famed for the legend of El Dorado. Cartagena

Cartagena, Colombia’s very own Caribbean beauty, has a way of captivating with its ageless charm. The city was born when the forsaken, ancient village of Calamarí was reestablished by the Spanish as a coastal stronghold in the 16th century. Ever since, Cartagena has held on to her colonial heritage, hidden behind a mediaeval stone wall that keeps the Caribbean at bay. The painstakingly preserved Old Town at this UNESCO World Heritage site, is dotted with colonial buildings and old churches, a famous fortress, monastery and convent. While in Cartagena, wake up to bright hues and vividly painted houses set alongside winding alleyways and cobbled streets. Pretty local artifacts, jewelry, masks, and local food carts line every street corner. In sharp contrast lies the upscale, beachside neighbourhood of Bocagrande with its tony condos, highrises, shopping malls and trendy eateries. The old and the new are balanced just right, like the best of Colombian coffee!

Included activities

Cartagena City Tour

Experience the grand colonial charm of this 16th century Spanish stronghold by the Caribbean Sea. Visit the imposing Fort San Felipe, whose tall stone walls still protect the city from the ‘pirates’ of the Caribbean Sea! A major Spanish port, it was mainly through Cartagena that most of the treasures of the Incas, the Andean and Amazonian empires were shipped off to the ‘Old World’. Relive the old times of rascally pirates and conquistadors, as you amble through winding streets and alleyways of the Old Town. Later visit the well-preserved historic buildings in Cartagena downtown. (Duration: 4 hours; Private Activity & Transfers; Fitness level: Easy; Please bring comfortable walking shoes. From November to March we plan this activity in the afternoon to avoid the crowds).

Baru Island

Barú is a long island on the Caribbean Sea, south of the city of Cartagena. It used to form the tip of a peninsula stretching out from mainland Colombia, before the Canal del Dique was built, cutting off the island. Your first encounter with this island paradise is very likely to be a leisurely boat ride to the beautiful shores of Playa Blanca by the Bay of Cartagena. Apart from the unbelievably crystal clear waters (glass bottom boat cruises and scuba diving come highly recommended), and the white and pink sand beaches, the island is bound by thick mangrove forests. The sea is so clear that it is possible to see a variety of fish and marine life beneath the shallow waters and spot plankton by the beach! Bird watching and water sports like kayaking and snorkeling are understandably popular activities here.
