Hveragerði, often called the ‘Hot Spring Town’ emerging from lofty lava fields, is known for its excellent thermal springs and fantastic restaurant scene! The pillars of steam rising among the surrounding hills make the town a geothermal hotbed and uniquely famous for its many greenhouses that grow vegetables and flowers all year long. The ‘Steam Valley’ region of Hveragerði is an easily accessible and incredibly popular place for hot spring bathing, hiking, horseback riding, and berry-picking. The hiking trails wind around lush, scenic hills dotted with fumaroles and mud pits along with flowers in full bloom. The Hveragerdi Geothermal Park, a highlight attraction, lets you enjoy a natural clay foot bath and sample the famous local black bread baked with heat from the ground. The town center boasts of breweries that make beer using geothermal energy, delicious bakeries, and quaint bistros serving traditional Icelandic cuisine. In the evenings, the greenhouses of Hveragerdi are lit up giving the area a beautiful, distinctive glow!

Discover the picturesque wilderness of Skaftafell in the Öraefi county along the southeastern coast of Iceland. It lies on the popular Ring Road that fringes the island. Eastfjords

The Eastfjords of Iceland is 75-mile stretch of coastline that extends from Berufjörður in the south to the village of Borgarfjörður Eystri in the north. Covering 8,773 square miles, it is a great place to spend a night or two. Borgarfjörður Eystri is said to be the place where the elves live and is a hiker’s paradise. Beautiful waterfalls such as Litlanesfoss and Hengifoss can be found here. The latter is the third tallest waterfall in Iceland, tumbling down 420 feet. The roughly one-hour trail that leads up to the falls is one of the most popular hiking routes in the area. The biggest town is Egilsstaðir, where you can enjoy a spa at Vok Baths or visit the Heritage Museum. The town also has plenty of restaurants and shops. The region is also the only place in Iceland where you can see reindeer, and is home to Hallormsstaðarskógur, the country’s largest forest.

Lake Mývatn

Lake Mývatn, the beautiful volcanic lake in North Iceland, boasts some truly stunning landscapes and rich biological diversity. Abounding with unique scenery, one side of the lake is covered with rocky lava fields while the other side ripples with lush green fields. The area is a birdwatcher’s paradise as it is home to 13 species of ducks and other rare birds, along with an impressive abundance of other wildlife. Two geothermal lava caves — Grjótagjá and Stóragjá – are popular tourist spots nearby. Hverabrauð, a dark, rye-like bread that is baked in the local area using the ground’s geothermal heat and often served with smoked trout caught fresh from the lake itself is a must-try. Short drives from Lake Mývatn will take you to many natural wonders such as bubbling hot springs, sulfur springs, intricate lava formations, deep craters, and glacial canyons. The area is also famous for its nature baths heated with mineral-rich waters where you can rejuvenate your tired muscles with a pint of beer in hand!

Tucked away by the Skagafjordur bay in North Iceland lies the scenic village of Varmahlíð. It is surrounded by the woodlands of Reykjarhóll, where clearly marked trails make for invigorating hikes to the top of the hill. On a clear day, the breathtaking views from the summit can extend all the way across the central region of Skagafjörður. Horse farms, the Icelandic Horse History Center and riding tours are available for those who’d like to truly understand the significance of the endemic animal in this region. The Skagafjörður Transportation Museum offers a more leisurely perspective, as well as the Glaumbær Farm & Museum that showcases traditional turf farm life. The historic Víðimýrarkirkja Church dates back to 1834 and is one of the last few turf churches in Iceland. There are heated public swimming pools in the village where you can unwind after a day outdoors. Make the most of long evenings with a drink at a local pub before you are ready to enjoy simple but hearty Icelandic fare.

Snaefellsnes Peninsula in west Iceland is known for its dramatic landscapes, comprising sparkling fjords, volcanic peaks, lava fields and stunning beaches. The glacier-capped Snaefellsjokull Volcano dominates this 62-mile-long peninsula. Also called ‘Iceland in Miniature,’ this picturesque region is dotted with charming fishing hamlets, historic villages and towns along the rugged yet beautiful Atlantic coastline. Whilst driving across the peninsula from Stykkisholmur on the north coast to Arnarstapi in the south, you’re greeted by magnificent vistas of purple lupine fields, rock formations horse farms and ancient ruins. There’s plenty to do here, including whale watching from Grundarfjordur, seal-spotting at Ytri Tunga and exploring an 8,000-year-old lava cave at Vatnshellir. In Snaefellsjokull National Park the big attractions are Malariff Lighthouse and Londrangar, part of an extinct volcano crater where two basalt volcanic rocks jut out from the ocean.
