Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki, the ancient port city on the Aegean Sea, is Greece’s second largest city. This vibrant city is strewn with ancient monuments and historic remains from its Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman eras. The city’s old Byzantine walls and bathhouse are worth a visit, but its truly landmark monuments are the White Tower of Thessaloniki and the Arch of Galerius. Thessaloniki’s patron saint is St. Demetrios, whose remains are to be found in a lovely old church. After strolling around town, the waterfront public square of Aristotelous is the perfect spot to settle down with a glass of wine or ouzo. The lively shopping precinct of Egnatia is another must-visit destination. The city’s newly redeveloped waterfront district is lined with trendy cocktail bars, seafood restaurants and tavernas playing traditional Greek music. Relish delicious fish and other seafood dishes cooked in the simple Mediterranean style with Balkan influences, paired with wonderful local wines. Also, while in town, don’t miss the pulsating nightlife.

Meteora

Meteora is a spectacular complex of hilltop Eastern Orthodox monasteries located in Central Greece. Perched on lofty sandstone pinnacles rising above the Thessalian plain, these centuries-old buildings with hidden hermetic caves and manicured garden terraces, are wonders of architecture and engineering. Home to Byzantine artifacts, prized manuscripts, well-preserved frescoes, and old pulley systems, the six sanctuaries afford panoramic vistas of the lush Peneas valley and the Pindos Mountains beyond. In addition to being a pilgrimage site for Orthodox Christians, Meteora attracts outdoorsy travelers who want to soak in the serenity of the natural surroundings. Enjoy hiking excursions on steep ancient footpaths, rock climbing on the unique geological formations, and camping adventures in scenic landscapes around. Keep an eye out for the endangered Egyptian vultures that are a symbol of Meteora! The atmospheric Kastraki village below is popular for traditional Greek cuisine, while the neighboring Kalambaka town is highlighted by the Natural History Museum of Meteora and Mushroom Museum.

Athens

Athens sits on the southeast side of the Greek mainland, near the Saronic Gulf and surrounded by the Attica mountains. The ancient city is considered the birthplace of democracy and the cradle of western civilization. The Acropolis is its most iconic landmark. Perched atop a rocky hill, take in panoramic views of the city from here. The historic center is a maze of neoclassical buildings, Byzantine churches and winding cobblestone streets. Plaka, Athens’ oldest and most charming neighborhood, is filled with craft shops, boutiques and tavernas serving authentic Greek food. As you wander, see residents enjoying long coffee breaks at cafes, going on evening strolls and having late dinners that often extend past midnight. Be sure to visit the National Archaeological Museum, which showcases a remarkable collection of artifacts. The changing of the guard ceremony at the Hellenic Parliament in Syntagma Square is quite a sight to behold. For a quick escape, head to Lake Vouliagmeni, a natural thermal lake just outside the city. It is a popular spot for a relaxing swim or lunch by the water.
