Muscat

Ringed by majestic mountains and the ocean, Muscat is an ancient port city that justly means ‘safe anchorage’. Check out 16th century Portuguese forts like Al Jalali and Mirani that perch on clifftops, while looking out on the bustling harbor below. Browse through Omani arts and artifacts at the Bait Al Zubair Museum where the country’s cultural heritage comes alive. The marble-built Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, on the other hand, is a modern marvel, topped by a 50-meter dome that dominates the city skyline. Spend lazy afternoons lounging on white sandy beaches or chasing sea turtles in picturesque lagoons just outside the city. Watch the last rays of the sun slant into exquisite gardens of the Royal Opera House and if possible, catch a show in this elegant arts complex. Khasab and Musandam Region

Khasab, the capital city of the Musandam province, is where the ancient maritime history of Oman comes alive. Dotted with picturesque dhows or local wooden boats, the Khasab Harbor is a popular starting point for scenic cruises past the Strait of Hormuz. Here you can savor rugged coastal views of fjord-like craggy inlets, stark mountainscapes, and even spot dolphins frolicking in the azure blue waters. The Khasab Fort is a history lover’s delight with romantic stone turrets and a museum displaying artifacts and archaeological finds from the past. Though originally built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, the Khasab Palace now is best known for its imposing circular tower and model wooden boats. But to really soak in the local color, check out the town souk that bustles with handicrafts, dried fruits, and leather goods. The lagoons off the Musandam Peninsula are not just popular swimming and boating destinations but perfect for a spot of scuba diving too. At the end of the day, it is time to relish the unique cuisine of Khasab, which ranges from sizzling grilled meats at street vendors to Portuguese-inspired fusion food in city restaurants.
