Palermo

Palermo, the largest city on the island of Sicily, has stood the test of time since the ancient ages, straddling the cultures of the Occident as well as the Orient. Don’t be surprised if you sight Gothic chapels lined with swaying date palm trees, or if you come up against ancient architecture sporting Islamic domes and early Christian frescos. That’s the rich essence of Palermo, home to the country’s largest opera house, the Teatro Massimo. The imposing buildings of the Palermo Cathedral, the Palazzo dei Normanni and the Cappella Palatina with its intricate Byzantine mosaic work point to the city’s heyday in the Middle Ages. A visit to the city’s busy central plaza, vibrant street markets and harbor front, however, will tell you that Palermo is still young at heart. Take in this ancient city’s youthful art scene and savor the nouvelle cuisine served up at the many artisanal eateries and trendy bars around town.

Cefalù

Cefalù, like much of Sicily’s resort towns, is a treat to visit with its lovely sandy beaches hugging the Mediterranean coast and the craggy mountains in the background. This ancient island region was on the trade route of countless kingdoms, right from the Greeks and Phoenicians to the Arab Moors and Normans, which left their influence on the town’s culture and landscape. This is evident in the Arab-Norman architecture as seen in the Norman cathedral and a medieval fortress with unmistakable Moorish influences in its interior mosaic work and tall minaret-like towers. Largely pedestrianized, it is easy to explore this pretty Mediterranean coast at leisure as you stroll down its medieval cobblestone alleys. Cefalù is also home to some of the best fish and seafood you’ll ever find on your Italian travels. Relish this along with eggplant caponata with pine nuts, chickpea fritters, fresh olives, capers and cheese, all washed down with crisp Sicilian white wine.
