Meaning the ‘hills of paradise’, Phonsavan is the lively new capital of Xieng Khouang Province, Laos. The town has a history that is both mysterious and intensely tragic, with a strong Vietnamese presence. Unaffected by urban planning the town can be admired from the surrounding rolling pine-clad hills topped with small resorts. Phonsavan is famous as it was one of the most heavily bombed areas in Laos and today remains littered with unexploded ordinance. It is best to use this city as a base for exploring the site of the mysterious Plain of Jars – scattered with clumps of large stone vessels, believed to be ancient funerary urns.
