Classified as a Central Forest Reserve, there are numerous strips of riverine forest that stretch out into the surrounding areas of sugar cane plantations and other cropland. Budongo has a high biodiversity with many species of primates, including some 600 – 700 chimpanzees; 465 species of trees and shrubs; 359 species of birds; 289 species of butterflies; and 130 species of moths. The terrain is flat allowing for good on-foot traveling conditions for chimp trekkers and with excellent visibility of the chimpanzees.
