Gurdaspur, founded by Sahib Deep Chand and named after his grandfather, the ‘Mahant Guridas’, is the administrative head of Punjab’s Gurdaspur District. It is a site of significant historical importance relating to the rise of the Sikh Confederacy, and was famous for the 1712 siege with the Mughals, where is located a fort (now a Hindu/Brahmin monastery). 10km from Gurdaspur, lies the India-Pakistan border, and while the Beas River flows on one side of Gurdaspur, the Ravi River flows on the other.
