It’s tough to not think of beer in Bamberg, located in northern Bavaria and a town known to have the highest concentration of brewpubs in the world! Home to nine breweries, the region is known for its unique Rauchbier (smoked beer) that is brewed at the historic Schlenkerla brewpub following ancient techniques and traditions. Spread across seven hills at the confluence of Main and Regnitz rivers, and surrounded by beautiful countryside, Bamberg is also an architectural haven featuring 15th century baroque and rococo edifices. Soak in the ‘Franconian Rome’ charm, admiring the landmark imperial cathedral, the fresco-covered old town hall amid a river, and the gabled half-timbered houses among others. The old town’s three distinct neighborhoods, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offer an insight into the history and social structure of Bamberg, making it a wonderful place to wander around. The hillside episcopal area with forts, palaces, and churches, the lively island town with canals and traditional fisherman houses fronted by rose gardens, all add to the charm of the city.
