Champagne Region in France

The UNESCO World Heritage site of the Champagne Region is best known for its globally renowned product: champagne. World over, champagne’s is recognized as a ‘geographical indication’ with the ‘champagne’ label only famously used for sparkling wine produced in the this region of France. The County of Champagne, meanwhile, traces its roots to the early medieval kingdom of Austrasia that was annexed to the French crown in the 1300s. Right from the early ages, the region has been famed for its hillside vineyards and its strictly regulated methods of metamorphosing those pinot noir, pinot meunier and chardonnay grapes into (what else?) – champagne. It is this ‘Method Champenois’ that connects champagne to its rich history, geographical location and image très luxueux. While in the region, traveling through the beautiful rural countryside and visiting old family-run champagne cellars and vineyards are a sensuous treat.
