Lake Mývatn, the beautiful volcanic lake in North Iceland, boasts some truly stunning landscapes and rich biological diversity. Abounding with unique scenery, one side of the lake is covered with rocky lava fields while the other side ripples with lush green fields. The area is a birdwatcher’s paradise as it is home to 13 species of ducks and other rare birds, along with an impressive abundance of other wildlife. Two geothermal lava caves — Grjótagjá and Stóragjá – are popular tourist spots nearby. Hverabrauð, a dark, rye-like bread that is baked in the local area using the ground’s geothermal heat and often served with smoked trout caught fresh from the lake itself is a must-try. Short drives from Lake Mývatn will take you to many natural wonders such as bubbling hot springs, sulfur springs, intricate lava formations, deep craters, and glacial canyons.
