Borgarfjörður in Iceland
Borgarfjörður is a stunning fjord in West Iceland, about an hour’s drive from Reykjavík through the Hvalfjarðargögn underwater tunnel. The more scenic route through Hvalfjörður valley takes an additional hour, but the drive is worth the time if you have it. The Borgarfjörður landscape consisting of waterfalls, lava fields and hot springs is stunning and includes the most powerful hot spring in Europe. The region contains the ‘Silver Circle,’ which includes the waterfalls of Deildartunguhver, Hraunfossar and Barnafoss, Krauma Geothermal Pool and Spa, and the historical site of Reykholt, famous for having been the home of Snorri Sturluson, Iceland’s best-known author. The region also contains Langjökull Glacier, the second largest glacier in Iceland. A man-made ice tunnel allows visitors to explore the inside of the glacier, making it the only place in the world where you can observe such a massive ice sheet from below.
Hotel Húsafell is a boutique retreat tucked away in the Borgafjordur Valley of Iceland's remote Western Region. This family-owned eco-conscious accommodation is set in the wilderness, surrounded by glacial rivers, snow-capped peaks, and birch forests.
