Fukuoka is a strategic harbor city anchored on Kyushu island in southern Japan. Historically, part of marine trade routes since the 13th century, discover a wealthy, cosmopolitan metropolis. Juxtaposed against this are live houses around town that bear testimony to the Mentai rock music which flourished during the 1980s. Just as exciting are the aroma–filled rows of yatai (Japanese street stalls) that pop up along the Naka river promenade every night. One of the best-known symbols of Fukuoka, these offer delicious local delicacies amid an eclectic ambiance.

Dazaifu: Day Trip to a Temple Town

Immerse yourself in the tranquil air of the beautiful little town of Dazaifu, barely half an hour’s drive from Fukuoka. Built during the late 7th century, it was the administrative capital of the Kyūshū archipelago for nearly half a century. An important military and diplomatic outpost of medieval Japan, today the town is visited for its numerous temples and shrines. The Tenmangu Shrine at Dazaifu is one of the most important in the land. It is dedicated to the spirit of Sugawara Michizane, who is associated with the Shinto deity of education, Tenjin, because of his great scholarship and learning. Stop by the striking Kyushu National Museum and discover the mutual influences and the history of cultural and diplomatic relationships enjoyed by Japan and mainland Asia down the centuries. Personalized Tour of Fukuoka Yatai Stalls

Enjoy the culinary delights of Fukuoka at the iconic open air food stalls known as ‘yatai’. These stalls are typically set up as evening approaches and fold up late at night or early in the morning. In the evening, meet your guide and travel by local trains and the subway to go yatai-hopping. Along the way, learn about the regional cuisine that centers around meat, fish, and ramen or noodle bowls. Head to the vibrant Nakasu Kawabata, the oldest shopping district in Fukuoka, and the streets in the Tenjin area, home to many of the 150-odd stalls in the city. Accompany your guide around the rows of yatai, with seating typically available for only about seven to eight people at a time. Make quick stops at some of the riverside stalls to taste their specialties and mingle with the locals, before it is time to head back. Nagasaki

Amble into Nagasaki, a beautiful harbor city on the northwestern coast of Kyushu island in Japan. With its backdrop of rolling hills standing guard over the meandering Uragami river, the city has charmed diverse communities and people into calling it home. Close to mainland Asia, foreign traders, merchants, and missionaries have thronged to Nagasaki since the 16th century. The only trading port during national isolation, the city has played a significant role in modernizing Japan. Walk around its busy streets and you’ll see many a trace of foreign influence on the architecture, food, and culture. Dutch colonial buildings stand alongside imposing Catholic Churches. Narrow lantern-lit streets give way to Western-style boulevards, and enticing aromas waft in from local streetside carts just outside fine dining international restaurants – this is where the East meets the West! Infamously bombed during World War II, Nagasaki’s bomb museums, monuments, installations, and memorials, add to the city’s ample character.

Nagasaki: A Colorful Fusion of Civilizations

Discover the unique ambience of this historic town that straddles both the orient and the occident with ease. As the only Japanese town that could interact with foreign merchants during the nation’s era of seclusion, it is home to old British mansions, churches and Chinese shrines. Visit the charming Glover Hill open-air museum, showcasing the residences of European merchants built during the second half of the 19th century. Enjoy panoramic views of the city and harbor stretched out below. Stop by the Chinese shrine of Koshi-byo dedicated to Confucius, built in the 1890s. Walkover to the city’s bustling Chinatown and sample the delicious steamed dumplings at the many street stalls. Your afternoon is dedicated to the Nagasaki Peace Park that commemorates the atomic bombing of Nagasaki in August, 1945. Discover how the city has recovered since that time, and visit the monuments and memorials leading up to the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum and the Hypocenter Park. Kumamoto

Kumamoto, nicknamed “fire country” for its proximity to the active volcano Mount Aso, invites you to explore its varied attractions. Located on the high speed bullet train route, the sprawling city is steeped in history with its World War II lineage and the formidable 16th century Kumamoto Castle that breaks through the cityscape. Many Japanese gardens create green oases across the city with Suizenji Joju-en, which adjoins the Suizenji Temple, being the most prominent among these. Devastated by an earthquake in 2016, the city has proven its indomitable spirit by getting back on its feet through extensive repairs and restructuring in the aftermath. The downtown area, which is a pulsating hub of commercial activity dotted with shopping arcades, restaurants, and bars, offers ample proof of this. Kumamoto’s rich cultural heritage can be experienced at one of its many festivals as well as at the local art museum and theater.

Begin your exploration of Kumamoto at Suizenji Garden that dates back to the 17th century. Stroll down the circular path with your guide to enjoy the beauty of this sprawling Japanese garden that was set up by the Hosokawa family. Delight in looking at miniature reproductions of the 53 post stations of the historically relevant Tokaido road, as well as Mount Fuji at this verdant park. Head over to the majestic 16th century Kumamoto Castle with its vast grounds and cluster of buildings. Despite being damaged by the massive earthquake of 2016, you can relish the complete castle experience at this spectacular edifice. Walk over to Josaien located next door to browse through a range of crafts and gastronomic delicacies. Browse through exhibits detailing the rich historical and cultural heritage of Kumamoto, before making your way back to the hotel. Aso/Kurokawa Onsen

Mount Aso, Japan’s largest active volcano, is located on Kyushu island. The awe-inspiring image of a volcanic crater spewing smoke, combined with improved accessibility, has turned the Aso caldera into a much sought-after attraction. The hike up to the numerous volcanic peaks dotting the caldera is a thrilling one and definitely not for the faint of heart. The natural wonders of the region extend right up to Kurokawa Onsen, a picturesque town with an impressive number of hot springs across its length and breadth. About a half hour drive from the Aso caldera, this town takes you back in time to an era before modernization swept the globe. With buildings made from natural materials such as wood, stone, and mud, the town invites you to experience authentic Japanese hospitality at its many ryokans or traditional inns. Spending some time at one of the charming rotenburo or outdoor baths that Kurokawa Onsen ryokans are famed for, is an experience that cannot be forgotten easily!

Spectacular Aso: Villages and Volcano Trek

Begin your discovery of the picturesque Aso region with a stop at Daikanbo Viewpoint for a glimpse of the Aso caldera and its sea of clouds visible on a clear day. Make your way to the quaint town of Kurokawa Onsen renowned for its many hot springs and equally famous ryokans or traditional Japanese inns. Find time to take a dip in a rotenburo or outdoor bath that the ryokan are famed for. Head out to Mt Nakadake Crater to look at an active volcano up close! Ascend down the slopes of this fiery mountain halting to admire the beauty of a grass-covered volcanic cone known as Komezuka. Stop by the Aso Volcano Museum to know more about the world’s largest caldera. You can also try following one of the many hiking and walking trails that start near the museum. Try the hike up to Mount Kijimadake which can be completed in an hour’s time after which you can start off for Kagoshima. Break your journey at Takachiho Gorge to explore the beautiful natural wonder which is also home to the spectacular Minotaki Falls. Walk along the edge of the gorge up to the shrine for some great pictures of the cliff formations wrought by the Gokase River as it winds by or hop into a rental rowboat to enjoy the views from the water. Kagoshima

Kagoshima, with its own unique Japanese dialect, is set by the sea on the island of Kyushu. The sunny climate, the friendly locals, and the beautiful bay, lead to frequent comparisons with the Italian city of Naples! The city abounds in natural attractions such as parks and aquariums. Having served as the capital of the powerful Satsuma province, Kagoshima maintains its dignified image to date with its palm-lined streets and the magnificent active volcano Sakurajima serving as a stunning backdrop. Kinko Bay is a popular starting point for cruises and ferries as well as activities such as dolphin watching and kayaking. Home to hundreds of onsens or mineral springs, Kagoshima is dotted with public bathhouses that invite you to enjoy the hot springs. Winter time promises to be just as enjoyable with plenty of sporting events hosted frequently.

Volcano Visit in Sakurajima

Set out on an expedition to scenic Sakurajima Island by ferry. One of Japan’s most active volcanoes and the symbol of Kagoshima, you’ll notice that the volcano is perpetually emanating smoke, and small-scale eruptions occur a few times a day! While it is not allowed to venture near the crater, enjoy strolling to various picturesque observation points and exploring hiking trails. You can also relax as you experience the foot baths filled with water from hot springs. Visit the several observatories and then head to the Visitor Center, where you can find out more about the geology of this majestic volcano. Yakushima

Yakushima, located off the coast of Kagoshima, is a slice of tropical heaven with its ancient cedar trees, some of which date back thousands of years. The mossy forest with its flowing streams, picturesque waterfalls, and rustic walkways provides the perfect opportunity to experience life away from the chaos of busy cities. The ethereal ambiance of this natural UNESCO World heritage site has inspired plenty of animators, writers, and filmmakers who have featured it in their works. Rainwear is a must at Yakushima as the island receives a significant amount of rain all through the year. Dotted with soaring mountains, macaques and deer comprise a significant portion of the island’s inhabitants. Yakushima is fast becoming a favorite with hikers given the many winding trails that traverse its forests. Quaint guest houses with basic amenities and local cuisine featuring fresh seafood complete the enchanting picture.

Embark on a picturesque hike under the canopies of Yakushima’s ancient trees. You will be picked up from your hotel by a local guide who will accompany you on a drive to the trailhead. Comfortable in a raised seat, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the passing scenery from the van. The Konohana hiking route you will be following is a great way to get to know the island; you will hike through the lush forest, admiring the swing bridges and the island’s spectacular rivers and falls. Take your time to click some photos along the hike, and go on to savor lunch that will be provided.
