Zagreb

Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, has to be experienced at leisure. The city’s rich culture, music and food festivals throughout the year, beautiful parks and plazas, pop-up markets and thousands of cafés at almost each step, invite travelers to delve deeper. At first sight, Zagreb impresses guests with its dignified Austro-Hungarian architecture. The twin spires of the Gothic Zagreb Cathedral and the medieval St. Mark’s Church with its tiled roof dominate the skyline near the central town square. The rest of the Upper Town is dotted with church spires and paved with cobblestones, waiting for you to enjoy long and leisurely walks through town. Its historical heritage aside, the city’s young and vibrant spirit is evident in the street walls covered with murals by local artists, and in its lively café culture. Sit enjoying an espresso at an outdoor coffee shop near the town square, admiring the architecture and watching people. Zagreb’s annual Christmas Markets with its live bands, traditional gift shops and mulled wine stalls are worth the experience.

Rovinj is a charming little fishing port on the Istrian peninsula, washed by the Adriatic Sea. The town was originally an island and part of the Rovinj archipelago, which lies just off the mainland. The Old Town is tightly packed with houses sitting close together, with a labyrinth of narrow cobblestone streets winding their way down to the seaside. The town’s most prominent landmark is St. Euphemia’s Church, perched on a hilltop, with panoramic views of the headland and waterfront. The laidback air invites travelers to let down their hair and enjoy a leisurely vacation, soaking in the sun and the sea, and people watching by the town square. Rovinj also boasts of lively outdoor markets that are fun to browse around. Relish the delicious fresh seafood, a variety of pastas, exquisite Istrian truffles and pršut or dried ham, all washed down by the local Terrano red wine liqueur known as Teranino.

The largest city of the Dalmatian region, Split is filled with historical and modern scenery. The UNESCO World Heritage site of Diocletian’s Palace, with its 4th century Roman stone gateway, ancient arches and ornate statues is a must-visit for every traveler. The palace basement and the nearby Klis Fortress were also part of the film locations of the hugely popular Game of Thrones. The city’s Archeological Museum and a third century Roman temple of Jupiter are not to be missed either. The lovely Marjan hill, which towers over the city’s medieval neighborhood, offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The locals love the great outdoors, so try catching the local football team in action while in town. The lively boardwalk of Riva, lined with bars and restaurants, offers an energetic nightlife. Hvar is a beautiful island resort on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea, well known for its hip and happening nightlife. Think a port harbor lined with smart yachts, ferry boats plying between nearby island towns, and the lure of secluded bays and beaches attracting vacationers to the island. Don’t be surprised to come across ornate Gothic palaces guarded by old medieval walls and long stretches of marble streets reserved only for pedestrians. The old town square, the medieval fortress of Fortica and a graceful Franciscan monastery offer a historical flavor of this port town. What Hvar is best known for however, is its buzzing after hours scene. After partying all night at the many lively bars in town, locals and travelers are often seen cooling off on the spectacular beaches of Dubovica or Hula Hula, lazing in the sun and soaking in the sea.

Korcula

Korčula is a lovely little Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea, just off the dramatic Dalmatian coast. The island is home to the centuries old port fort town of Korčula, which is still to be seen today. The imposing St Mark’s Cathedral is worth a visit, as is the St Mark’s Abbey Treasury, which has now been turned into a museum. The town boasts of quite a few other museums as well, but its best kept secrets are the quiet coves and sandy beaches skirting the island town. The outskirts of town are dotted with beautiful olive groves, vineyards, and local villages. Korčula’s islanders have zealously held on to their traditional culture, regaling travelers to its Adriatic shores with folk performances. This island region produces delicious local wines, especially Croatian white wines, which go wonderfully well with the region’s fresh seafood. When in town, devour plates of fresh octopus salads, grilled sardines, Bluefin tuna and mussels cooked in garlic and wine sauce. Delicious!

Dubrovnik has to be one of the best preserved historical towns standing by the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea. The Old Town of Dubrovnik, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is nothing short of a time capsule, taking you back centuries to its heyday as a great mercantile port. Standing at the foothills of Mount Srdj, beside the Dalmatian coast, the town’s natural landscape is just as impressive as its heritage architecture. Parts of the old sea fort rise right from the town’s waterfront precinct, complete with a massive tower, fortified walls, beautiful palaces and churches. Must visit monuments include the St. Blaise Church with its grand Baroque architecture, the Sponza Palace from the Renaissance period, and the Rector’s Palace, which is a museum today. A cable car ride up to Mount Srdj is worth the panoramic view of the city spread out beneath. Settle down at the pedestrian only town square lined with eateries, enjoying black risotto and the local rožata pudding.
