As you head out from Lake Mývatn, get ready for the splendor of Góðafoss which translates to ‘Waterfall of Gods.’ Watch as the waters of the Skjálfandafljót river thunder down a 30-meter wide horseshoe-shaped rock, flowing into a 7000-year-old lava field from the Trölladyngja volcano. After taking in the magnificence of the falls that have birthed legends and folklore about Norse gods and heroes, it is time to make your way to the northern town of Akureyri. Like any other Icelandic town, Akureyri offers a plethora of outdoor adventures – go horseback riding on farms or whale watching along the coast. The Lystigarðurinn, Akureyri's botanical garden is a great place to take a leisurely stroll as you marvel at the lush greenery and summer blossoms, so close to the Arctic Circle. Later, wander past quaint turf houses, many of them preserved for their architectural heritage, before making your way to the iconic Akureyri Church that dominates the downtown horizon.
