The Hveragerdi Geothermal Park, a highlight attraction, lets you enjoy a natural clay foot bath and sample the famous local black bread baked with heat from the ground. Eastfjords

The Eastfjords of Iceland is 75-mile stretch of coastline that extends from Berufjörður in the south to the village of Borgarfjörður Eystri in the north. Covering 8,773 square miles, it is a great place to spend a night or two. Borgarfjörður Eystri is said to be the place where the elves live and is a hiker’s paradise. Beautiful waterfalls such as Litlanesfoss and Hengifoss can be found here. The latter is the third tallest waterfall in Iceland, tumbling down 420 feet. The roughly one-hour trail that leads up to the falls is one of the most popular hiking routes in the area. The biggest town is Egilsstaðir, where you can enjoy a spa at Vok Baths or visit the Heritage Museum. The town also has plenty of restaurants and shops. The region is also the only place in Iceland where you can see reindeer, and is home to Hallormsstaðarskógur, the country’s largest forest.

Lake Mývatn

Lake Mývatn, the beautiful volcanic lake in North Iceland, boasts some truly stunning landscapes and rich biological diversity. The Mývatn Nature Baths are a set of geothermally heated pools and steam baths found in the Lake Mývatn area. The bath water flows directly from Landsvirkjun’s borehole in Bjarnarflag to a large reservoir and then into the lagoon. Relax and invigorate your body in the mineral-rich, alkaline waters, said to be beneficial for skin problems, asthma and respiratory diseases. A unique chemical composition also makes the waters free of bacteria and other vegetation. Get a chance to experience a steam bath in geothermal steam rising from vents on the floor. Believed to be the hoofprint of an eight-legged horse from Norse mythology, this canyon offers ample photo opportunities. Travel on to the Tjornes Peninsula that sits tucked between two fjords. Tucked away by the Skagafjordur bay in North Iceland lies the scenic village of Varmahlíð. It is surrounded by the woodlands of Reykjarhóll, where clearly marked trails make for invigorating hikes to the top of the hill. On a clear day, the breathtaking views from the summit can extend all the way across the central region of Skagafjörður. Horse farms, the Icelandic Horse History Center and riding tours are available for those who’d like to truly understand the significance of the endemic animal in this region. The Skagafjörður Transportation Museum offers a more leisurely perspective, as well as the Glaumbær Farm & Museum that showcases traditional turf farm life. The historic Víðimýrarkirkja Church dates back to 1834 and is one of the last few turf churches in Iceland. As you head out from Lake Mývatn, get ready for the splendor of Góðafoss which translates to ‘Waterfall of Gods.’ Watch as the waters of the Skjálfandafljót river thunder down a 30-meter wide horseshoe-shaped rock, flowing into a 7000-year-old lava field from the Trölladyngja volcano. After taking in the magnificence of the falls that have birthed legends and folklore about Norse gods and heroes, it is time to make your way to the northern town of Akureyri. Like any other Icelandic town, Akureyri offers a plethora of outdoor adventures – go horseback riding on farms or whale watching along the coast. Snaefellsnes Peninsula

Snaefellsnes Peninsula in west Iceland is known for its dramatic landscapes, comprising sparkling fjords, volcanic peaks, lava fields and stunning beaches. The glacier-capped Snaefellsjokull Volcano dominates this 62-mile-long peninsula. Also called ‘Iceland in Miniature,’ this picturesque region is dotted with charming fishing hamlets, historic villages and towns along the rugged yet beautiful Atlantic coastline. Whilst driving across the peninsula from Stykkisholmur on the north coast to Arnarstapi in the south, you’re greeted by magnificent vistas of purple lupine fields, rock formations horse farms and ancient ruins. Reykjanes is a geothermal peninsula that makes up the southwestern tip of Reykjanesskagi in Iceland. The name of this UNESCO Global Geopark means smoking peninsula’ and the other-worldly landscape is filled with moss covered lava fields, volcanic craters, caves and hot springs. Iceland’s Keflavik International Airport is located in this region, 50 kilometre southwest of Reykjavik. Blue Lagoon is a geothermal Spa fed by steaming hot waters from the nearby Svartsengi geothermal power station.
