The village of Abu Simbel exists as a testament to the world’s desire and determination to preserve one of Egypt’s historical treasures. Located near the Egypt-Sudan border, it is the home of the Abu Simbel temple complex comprising the Great Temple of Ramses II and the Temple of Hathor. These were originally built by King Ramses II in the 13th century to project the strength of the Pharaohs over the Nubian region. When the Aswan Dam threatened to submerge the entire complex, an international campaign helped relocate it to higher ground in 1968. An artificial hill was made from a domed structure, and the original temples were cut and reassembled at their new location. Today, the complex is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Nubian Monuments.
