What is the best time to visit Egypt?

Pleasant temperatures and plenty of sunshine characterize the months from October to April, making it the best time to visit Egypt. The winter months from November to February are, by far, the most popular times to travel, with people heading to Cairo, the pyramids, and other top places to visit in Egypt to escape colder climes. Spring and autumn present equally conducive weather conditions with slightly leaner crowds making it an excellent time to plan your Egypt vacation packages.

The shoulder months of October, March, and April are the best time to visit Egypt if you want pleasant weather and fewer tourists at the main attractions. It is also a great time to go on a river cruise on the Nile.

The summer months from May to September see temperatures range from the mid-80s to upwards of 100°F. It is a quieter time to visit the country as the daytime sun can be harsh. It is, however, a good time to enjoy Egypt’s coast and spend time at one of the country’s seaside resorts.

overview

It is the coolest month and one of the busiest times of the year to go on an Egypt vacation. Daytime temperatures in the mid-60s to 70s and sunny skies make it a great month for sightseeing. Expect occasional rain showers along the coast. Evenings and early mornings can get chilly, so pack a warm layer.

we recommend

    • Head out on a full-day tour of the monuments on the West Bank
    • Be awed by one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the Pyramids of Giza

overview

Though less crowded than the previous month, February is still busy. With Europe and North America facing one of its coldest periods this month, it is one of the best times to visit Egypt. Temperatures inch up a little and are in the 70s and are just right for outdoor activities, be it beach lounging or pyramid viewing.

we recommend

    • Marvel at the stunning architecture as you stroll through Islamic Cairo’s mosques and tombs
    • Take in the hustle and bustle of Cairo from the top of the Bab Zuweila minaret

overview

The crowds thin down considerably, but temperatures in the 70s and low 80s make it one of the best months to go on an Egypt vacation. During the second half of the month, the khamseen wind starts to blow in, bringing in hot air and dust and causing sandstorms occasionally. More often than not, these winds do not cause any significant disturbance.

we recommend

    • Revel in a magical sunset aboard a traditional felucca on the Nile in Cairo
    • Learn about the Nubian people with a visit to local villages and the Nubian museum in Aswan

overview

Temperatures are mostly in the 70s or 80s during the day. The Khamsin Winds continue into April though they do not affect travel. Depending on when Easter falls, April can be a busy month. Ramadan typically falls in March or April. Expect modified working hours for restaurants and other retail establishments.

we recommend

    • Get a peek into the culture of Egypt during the Ramadan celebrations

overview

Expect hot days with plenty of sunshine during this month. Temperatures are mainly in the 80s, though, in cities like Aswan, in the southern part, they can cross the 100-degree mark. It’s a good month to visit Egypt if you want a quieter experience. The coastal towns are slightly cooler, and the incoming sea breeze keeps conditions manageable.

we recommend

    • Check into one of the many fabulous resorts along the coast of the Red Sea and get your dose of Vitamin Sea
    • Go museum hopping in Luxor

overview

It’s the start of the country’s blazing hot summer season. Daytime highs across most cities fall in the 90s or 100s. The beach is a popular destination this month, especially for the locals. This month, northern and coastal cities see lower temperatures than inland and southern towns.

we recommend

    • Get a bird’s eye view of the city from the top of the Cairo Tower
    • Sign up for a variety of watersports at the resort towns by the Red Sea

overview

The heat wave continues making it one of the quietest times of the year. Daytime highs range from 95F to 108°F. If you are visiting this month, it is best to sightsee during the early morning and evening hours and retreat to your hotel during the peak afternoon sun hours. Adding a beach destination to your itinerary is also a good idea.

we recommend

    • The sea, surf, and sand await in Sharm el-Sheikh Sheikh, a resort town on the Red Sea
    • Learn about the country’s rich history and heritage at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo

overview

High temperatures continue making August one of the hottest months of the year. The country’s popular attractions see little to no crowds. However, domestic tourism is at its busiest along the coast, with locals heading to the beaches to cool off.

we recommend

    • Explore Hurghada’s many fantastic diving sites
    • Get a taste of local culture with a Bedouin dinner in the desert

overview

The heat wave starts easing off, especially during the latter half of the month. Domestic tourism also tapers off by the end of the month, making it a quiet month to visit the country. So, no matter where you plan to visit, the pyramids or the beaches, you won’t encounter huge crowds or long lines.

we recommend

    • Discover a spectacular underwater world while snorkeling in the Red Sea in Hurghada
    • Take in the size and scale of the Valley of Kings and Queens in Luxor

overview

It is the start of the high season. Still, with the holiday crowds yet to arrive, it is one of the best times to visit Egypt. Conditions are perfect for snorkeling in the Red Sea, and the lines are still manageable at the popular tourist attraction; all in all, a great month to plan an Egypt vacation.

we recommend

    • Be part of the ancient Sun festival at Abu Simbel
    • Sign up for a delightful overnight Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor or vice versa

overview

Weather conditions start to get more conducive and, naturally, attract more visitors to the country. It’s a great month to travel to Egypt and explore its cities and ancient sites. Festivals add to the vibrancy of the country. Conditions are perfect for a beach retreat or a desert adventure.

we recommend

    • Explore the Tombs of Nobles in Aswan
    • Lose yourself in the narrow alleys of the Khan el-Khalili souk in Cairo, the perfect place to pick up souvenirs

overview

Temperatures cool down but are still warm enough to provide sun worshippers with plenty of Vitamin D. Daytime highs hover between 70 – 77°F, while nighttime lows can even drop into the single digits. It’s one of the busiest times of the year and a great month to visit Egypt; just be sure to plan ahead.

we recommend

    • Discover Aswan’s many charming islands, including Elephantine Island and Agilika Island, the site of the Philae Temple
    • Explore Luxor’s fascinating temples and ruins

What to Pack for a Trip to Egypt?

With Egypt being an Islamic country, modest clothing is recommended while traveling there. Daytimes are typically warm and sunny, so choose breathable fabrics such as cotton and linens.

Women travelers can pack lightweight tops and dresses that cover the shoulders. If you plan on bringing sleeveless tops, pack a cardigan or scarf that can double as a cover-up when needed. Skirts and pants that fall below the knees are best when you are out and about sightseeing. Similar guidelines apply to men. Half-sleeve and full cotton or linen shirts and T-shirts will protect you from the sun and ensure you stay cool. Long shorts, capris, khakis, and comfortable linen pants with drawstrings work great for the weather and sightseeing.

Evenings during winter can get chilly, so if you are traveling during the cooler months, pack a few warm layers, such as sweaters, a light jacket, or a shawl. You can take regular beachwear for the pool area at your resort, but remember to pack a cover-up.

Sightseeing in Egypt involves a lot of walking in sandy, dusty conditions. Closed, good-quality walking shoes are recommended. Protect yourself from the sun’s rays with a pair of glasses, a sun hat, and sunscreen.
