Lake Kivu is the largest of fresh water lakes that simmers in the valleys of Rwanda with irregular shores that form numerous inlets and myriad forest-fringed waterfalls. The beautiful lake is enclosed by the steep terraced hills that are characteristic of rural Rwanda and sitting on its shores are interconnected towns that offer water sports or boating to the numerous islands on the lake. Gisenyi lies on the northern tip of Lake Kivu opposite the town of Goma and with stunning views of the Congolese mountains on the other side of the lake.
