Asian Diamond: The Highs of Travel to South Korea

Enter a dazzling but unfamiliar world when you travel to South Korea. Even if you know nothing of K-pop and K-dramas, and your knowledge of South Korea doesn’t extend beyond Samsung and kimchi, you’ll find this country fascinating. South Korea may be geographically small, but its energy is high, and it’s best to enlist a little help navigating your way through it. Let the travel experts at Enchanting Travels step in and custom-build an itinerary that incorporates both the futuristic and heritage charms of this nation.

The capital, Seoul, is a true megacity. Visit Gangnam, Seoul’s ultramodern, trendy district, immortalized in the famous music video by Korean pop star Psy in 2012. Wander through the royal palaces of Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung before heading to Bukchon Hanok Village for a glimpse of well-preserved traditional houses along cobblestone streets. Shopping aficionados, especially those interested in Korea’s booming cosmetic industry, must make a beeline for Myeongdong Shopping Street.

Less than 200 miles south of Seoul, youthful and arty Gwangju is an excellent base for excursions to the tranquil Boseong green tea plantations or hikes through Mudeungsan National Park. The city’s May 18 National Cemetery and memorial park commemorate the 1980 uprising against martial law.

The coastal city of Busan strikes an interesting contrast to the capital. It is the country’s primary port city with mountains, unspoiled beaches, world-class shopping malls, and even a bohemian enclave.

North of Busan, historical centers like Gyeongju and Andong have UNESCO Heritage Sites, where you can delve deeper into South Korea’s history, ancient traditions, customs, and crafts. Gyeongju, the old Shilla-dynasty imperial capital, is a treasure trove of tombs, pagodas, temples, and palaces. Andong’s big attraction is Hahoe Folk Village, which preserves the architecture of the Joseon dynasty. Andong also boasts the seventh-century Bongjeongsa Temple and the Confucian Culture Museum. If you visit South Korea in early autumn, you can attend the Andong Mask Dance Festival, and if you come in spring, don’t miss the king cherry blossoms in full bloom.
Travel to South Korea’s largest island Jeju, where you can explore an underground lava tube cave and hike volcanic mountain peaks for stunning views. Dining is a special treat here as the island’s unique cuisine is built around local seafood caught by Jeju’s famous female deep-sea divers, aged 60-plus.

Whether at small street markets or high-end urban restaurants, South Korean cuisine is flavorful, creative, innovative and healthy. Expect to be served many avatars of kimchi, the country’s beloved pickled vegetable accompaniment. While barbecued meats and seafood dominate menus, vegetarian Buddhist temple food is also a tradition. And for those who appreciate a good tipple, soju, the vodka-like national drink, will envelop you in a warm embrace.
