Dong Van is situated right at the heart of North Vietnam’s Dong Van Stone Plateau, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Overlooked by the dramatic karst countryside, the town makes for the perfect stopover while exploring the limestone ranges and hill villages of the Ha Giang region. Dong Van’s colorful Sunday market is a major draw, attracting locals as well as travelers to its bustling stalls laden with local produce and artefacts. The old French fort perched on top of a karst peak offers stunning panoramic views of the town and a giant patchwork of emerald rice fields skirted by craggy peaks. The old town dating back to the French colonial era still has a few old adobe houses with tiled roofs and wooden frames. There is much to explore of the traditional culture and lifestyles of the local hill communities dotting the region. The Lung Cu Flag Tower, which stands atop Dragon Mountain, is worth a visit too. About a half hour’s drive from the town, it is modeled on the flag tower of Hanoi.
