This little coastal village lies within the Tortuguero National Park. The sea beaches along Tortuguero Village are well known as the nesting colony of sea turtles. Accessible mainly through waterways and airway, the thick rain forests around the village are criss-crossed by an intricate network of freshwater canals. Take a boat down the Lucky River or fly into this area for its rich wildlife sighting opportunities. You may find yourself face to face with a cheeky monkey, or staring into the eyes of a resting croc on the sand banks, as it basks under a tropical sun. If you’re very lucky, you could sight a jaguar, tapirs or manatees in the wetlands and jungles inside the park. Sea turtle enthusiasts will have a truly memorable experience if they join one of the night turtle tours led by a National Park guide.
