Palenque is an erstwhile Mayan city that is known for its spectacular and well-preserved temples. Set in the midst of a jungle, surrounded by mahogany, cedar, and sapodilla trees, the ancient ruins at this UNESCO-listed site make for a breathtaking scene. Much of the ruins are yet to be excavated and the stone edifices that tower over them look just as magnificent today as they did centuries ago! Misol-Há waterfall is located just a short distance from the ruins and makes for a great picnic spot with its natural pool and cave. If you are up for a slightly longer drive, the aqua green waters of Cascadas de Agua Azul make for an impressive sight.
