Plitviče Lakes National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage reserve forest area in the heart of Croatia. Waters flowing over the limestone and chalk geological formations here have created natural dams over thousands of years that have in turn created a series of lakes, caves, cascades and waterfalls. Expect a beautiful, thickly wooded area with 16 crystalline lakes at various levels, connected with each other through tumbling cascades and waterfalls. Croatia’s tallest waterfall, the Veliki Slap, is also located here. Wooden footbridges and walking trails winding their way around the lakes and waterfalls, create wonderful hiking opportunities, while electric boat rides ferry travelers to and from the upper and lower lakes. The heavy forests and mineral-rich waters attract clouds of butterflies, rare birds, bears and wolves.
