Eastfjords in Iceland

Snaefellsnes Peninsula in west Iceland is known for its dramatic landscapes, comprising sparkling fjords, volcanic peaks, lava fields and stunning beaches. The glacier-capped Snaefellsjokull Volcano dominates this 62-mile-long peninsula.

Strandir is one of the most remote parts of Iceland. It is a wild and rugged place that includes low hills and high mountains, and its coastline stretches across the eastern part of the Westfjords.

Borgarfjörður is a stunning fjord in West Iceland, about an hour’s drive from Reykjavík through the Hvalfjarðargögn underwater tunnel. The more scenic route through Hvalfjörður valley takes an additional hour, but the drive is worth the time if you have it.

Hella is a picturesque little town that sits tucked between Selfoss and Hvolsvollur along the famous Ring Road in southern Iceland. Offering splendid views of Hekla, one of the active volcanoes in the country, this riverside town is a popular destination for fishing enthusiasts.

Tucked away by the Skagafjordur bay in North Iceland lies the scenic village of Varmahlíð. It is surrounded by the woodlands of Reykjarhóll, where clearly marked trails make for invigorating hikes to the top of the hill. On a clear day, the breathtaking views from the summit can extend all the way across the central region of Skagafjörður.

Flúðir is a lovely little village that stands at the foot of the Miðfell Mountain, with the beautiful spring-fed river of Litla-Laxá running through it. The rolling emerald green plains surrounding Flúðir are not too far from Geysir and the popular Gullfoss waterfall.
