Amman in Jordan

Amman, the capital of Jordan, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. The world’s oldest statues of the human form were found here in the eighth millennium BC. The rapid growth of modern Amman has come to overshadow the ancient city, but downtown Amman still retains much of its traditional character. Numerous souks rub shoulders with independent businesses, particularly bookstalls. Jabal Amman, one of the seven hills that made up the original city, hosts the Souk Jara, a major market, every Friday from mid-May to mid-September. Wander around the Hashemite plaza, which is bordered by the ruins of the Roman theatre and the Odeon.

Head up to the top of Citadel Hill, the highest point in Amman, for gorgeous sunset views over the city. The Citadel is also home to the Umayyad Palace complex, the Temple of Hercules and the Byzantine Church. The city’s food scene has evolved considerably over the years as well. Fine-dining restaurants serving Italian and French cuisine now compete with outlets serving the traditional food of the Levant.
