Virginia Beach is a seaside town that stands at the confluence of the Atlantic and Chesapeake Bay. Its miles of sandy beaches, seaside boardwalk and watersports activities make it a popular summer vacation destination. Sail down the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge (it’s nicer than the name sounds!) or the more tranquil Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Head out in search for dolphins and sea birds. There are a great many flocks of coastal birds to be found along the oceanfront and inland waterways. Spend a day at the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center and retrace the steps of the first English colonists in the early 1600s at the First Landing State Park. Have fun shucking fresh oysters with local craft beer. Dine on delicious seafood, caught fresh from Chesapeake Bay.
