Grand Hotel Des Iles Borromees is a historic Art Nouveau hotel that overlooks Lake Maggiore in Stresa, Italy. It gained international attention after American writer Ernest Hemingway set part of his novel ‘A Farewell to Arms’ in the hotel. Hemingway had stayed at the hotel in September 1918 at the age of 19 while recovering from a war wound and was captivated by the beauty of the place. The sumptuous lounges are furnished in opulent shades of blue, purple and gold while the elegant rooms and suites blend history and luxury. Some of the rooms come with balconies that look out over the lake. Enjoy a meal in the elegant lake front room of Il Borromeo, then follow in Hemingway’s footsteps by ordering a martini at the Hemingway Bar. Relax by the large swimming pool complex that was opened in 2021, complete with hydromassage beds and waterfalls. Treat yourself to a massage at the Des Iles SPA or enjoy a soak in the Turkish bath. Explore the park that was established on the grounds at the same time as the Grand Hotel in 1863. It features a parterre of flowerbeds set in the Italian style.
