2 Nights

Quito

The capital of Ecuador, Quito, is one of the most visited countries in South America. Surrounded by volcanoes and the Andean highlands the city provides a cultural feast with its many churches and monasteries. The impressive Gothic basilica offers splendid vistas from its towering heights -it’s fitting that the colonial centre has UNESCO World Heritage status. You can experience the city’s bustling and charming markets too. Quito is one of the highest capitals in the world at 3,000 meters above sea level and so requires altitude acclimatization before you venture out.

Included activities

Quito City tour and Middle of the World

On this private full day guided tour, visit the Independence Square flanked by the Cathedral, the Presidential Palace, the Municipal Building and the Archbishop’s Palace. Continue to the Church of San Francisco, one of the greatest religious buildings of the New World. Its impressive façade and atrium lead to its gold interior, Baroque influence by Moorish style, with the winged Virgin of Quito at its main altar. Then continue approx. 25 km north of Quito to the ‘Middle of the World.’ Here at the 30 m tall monument, learn about the French-Spanish geodetic expedition of 1736-1744 which determined the position of the Equator. Stand and have your picture taken with one leg in the northern hemisphere and the other leg in the southern hemisphere of the earth. (Full day, private activity, lunch included)

Yasuni

The outstanding biological diversity of Yasuni makes it a noteworthy Amazon destination. Located in northeast Ecuador, the UNESCO Yasuni Biosphere Reserve and National Park is one of few places in the world where plant, mammal, amphibian, and bird species all reach their maximum biodiversity. Throughout wetlands, marshes, swamps, lakes, rivers and tropical rainforest, scientists have registered more than 500 species of birds! Visitors keep an eye out for hard to spot animals such as jaguars, harpy eagles, pumas and tapirs. The Yasuni National Park is also claimed ancestral land of the Huaorani indigenous peoples; communities such as the Tagaeri and Taromenane have chosen to live deep in the jungle in voluntary isolation.

Included activities

Included Activities at Napo Wildlife Center (4 days)

Pick up at Coca airport. The activities of the day begin with a two-hour motorboat ride along the Napo River, a privileged opportunity to observe majestic Amazonian wildlife species such as kingfishers and herons. Embark on a paddle-canoe journey along the estuaries leading to the Napo Wildlife Center standing on the shores of the Añagu Lake. On day two, visit several parrot clay licks and admire the colorful spectacle of more than 11 species of birds coming together to feed with the minerals concentrated in the soil. In the afternoon, hike a forest trail leading to a local township to learn about the customs and traditions of the Kichwa Añagu Community. On day three, climb 36 meters high to the Canopy Observation tower where flocks of birds such as vibrantly colored tanagers, macaws and toucans will pass you by. In the afternoon, explore the lower levels of the forest that are home to lizards, monkeys, rare insects and snakes. Also keep your eyes open for Giant Otters at the black Añagu Lake. On day four, slowly sink in the sounds and sights of the forest as you enjoy the paddle-cannoe and motorboat ride back to Coca.

Private transfer from Quito to Cotopaxi (75 km, 1 hr)

1 Night

Cotopaxi

The Cotopaxi province of Ecuador is home to what German explorer Alexander von Humboldt coined ‘The Avenue of Volcanoes’ and contains some of the most dramatic mountain scenery of the country. The province is named after the stunning Cotopaxi volcano, which was described by Humboldt ‘the most beautiful and regular of all the colossal peaks in the high Andes. It is a perfect cone covered by a thick blanket of snow which shines so brilliantly at sunset it seems detached from the azure of the sky.’ In addition to its scenery, this province features a series of small towns known for their indigenous heritage and colorful markets. The region is also known for its historical haciendas (estates) found in the surrounding hills, where we recommend staying for a truly authentic and unforgettable experience.

Transfer to Riobamba

1 Night

Riobamba

Riobamba is situated 2750 meters above sea level and surrounded by majestic volcanoes, some of which are still active. Because of this privileged location, the city is also known as ‚Sultana of the Andes‘. Due to a strong earthquake in 1797, which destroyed the city almost completely, it possesses almost no historical buildings. Nevertheless, it is a worthwhile destination: A large share of the population is of indigenous origin, which is why many traditions and customs have been retained until today. This can be observed best at the numerous vibrant city markets, where traditionally dressed market-women offer a large variety of products. Furthermore, the city is a perfect starting point for excursions to the surrounding volcanic mountains and the spectacular train ride to the Devil‘s Nose.

Included activities

Andean Volcano Adventure

Venture into the scenic Panamericana South Highway towards the breathtaking Cotopaxi peak, the world’s highest active volcano at 5,897 meters of altitude. Stroll around the vast Limpiopungo Lake to sink in the magnificent views of the snowcapped Cotopaxi and nearby Rumiñahui peaks. A short trek in the National Park may grant you the opportunity to admire unique wildlife species such as the Andean condor, the Andean fox, the Andean spectacled bear, the white-tailed or little red brocket deer. Before heading out, stop by the Interpretation Centre to pick up a handmade souvenir or to grab snacks to take along for the drive towards Riobamba.

The colonial architecture from that time is well-preserved and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. Stroll through the narrow cobblestone streets of the old city and marvel at the monumental churches and the colonial houses with their opulently decorated facades and the beautiful metal balconies. Cuenca is known as the cultural centre of Ecuador and home to many museums and galleries. It is known for its long handicraft tradition: Visit the colorful local markets for jewelry, ceramics, textiles and the world famous panama hats.

From the heights of Loma de Llugli, feel the gaze of Saint Peter bestowing his blessings as you hop on the public train towards the Devil’s Nose station. En route to Cuenca, you will visit the archaeological site of Ingapirica, the most important and best preserved Inca ruins of Ecuador. Envision what life was like for the early Cañari settlers who built the Sun Temple, the Incas who converted the site to a military stronghold or the Spanish who built new cities with original stones from this sacred place. Learn more at the museum before lunchtime and relax afterwards for the remaining two hour journey towards the beautiful city of Cuenca.

Full day sightseeing Cuenca

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the colonial city of Cuenca is best appreciated by foot. Experience the beauty and atmosphere of the Old Town as you browse through its flower and handicrafts markets, step into art galleries and magnificent churches, admire the beautiful colonial buildings with wrought iron balconies and carved wooden doors. Choose from a variety of museum exhibitions ranging from religious and colonial art to archaeological relics and anthropological exhibitions of various ethnic groups of Ecuador. Appreciate the differences among modern neighborhoods and historic houses perched on cliffs high above the Tomebamba River. You will be treated to an amazing panoramic view from Turi point, and as per your preference, the tour will conclude with a visit to a ceramic art gallery, a Panama hat factory or a local artist’s workshop.
