Ponta Delgada, São Miguel Island

Ponta Delgada, the capital of the Azores archipelago, lies on the south coast of the Sao Miguel Island. This scenic town boasts ancient monuments, including the imposing three-arched city gates in the Praça de Gonçalo Velho and the Gothic-style Church of St. Sebastian. The 16th-century fort and the Carlos Machado Museum that documents Azorean natural history and culture also offer a fascinating view of the region’s history. Walk along narrow cobblestone lanes to get a feel of the town’s past, captured in its architecture. For the best photo opportunities, head to the breathtaking Lagoa das Sete Cidades – a twin lake in a volcanic caldera, its steep banks rich with ferns and wildflowers. The leafy Praca 5 Outubro square and the Antonio Borges Garden are lovely spots to relax in the evenings

Furnas, São Miguel Island

Furnas is located on the eastern side of Sao Miguel Island in Azores, a 45-minute drive from the Ponta Delgada. It is a giant volcanic crater formed by an eruption in the 1600s. Although the volcano is dormant, you can still see plenty of thermal pools and hot springs – all created by the volcanic activity. You can also spot geothermal steam holes (fumaroles) where the cozido (stew) is cooked underground for several hours. The tranquil Furnas lake makes for a magical setting for a hike, with the dramatic mountains as a backdrop. For a bird’s eye view of the entire landscape, head up to the scenic Pico do Ferro viewpoint. The Terra Nostra with its hotel and restaurant and Poca de Dona Beija are other scenic landmarks, both offering the chance to take a rejuvenating dip in outdoor thermal pools.
