Furnas, São Miguel Island in Portugal

Furnas is located on the eastern side of Sao Miguel Island in Azores, a 45-minute drive from the Ponta Delgada. It is a giant volcanic crater formed by an eruption in the 1600s. Although the volcano is dormant, you can still see plenty of thermal pools and hot springs – all created by the volcanic activity. You can also spot geothermal steam holes (fumaroles) where the cozido (stew) is cooked underground for several hours. The tranquil Furnas lake makes for a magical setting for a hike, with the dramatic mountains as a backdrop.
