The mere mention of Munich and one conjures up images of annual Oktoberfest gatherings where lederhosen and dirndl-clad women serve beer in large tankards! Although beer halls, including the 16th-century Hofbräuhaus and modern open-air beer gardens are commonplace, this wonderful capital of Bavaria that straddles the Isar river in southern Germany has a lot more to offer. Contemporary art quarters, plus automotive and comedy museums, stand next to the world’s best science and technology collections housed in heritage buildings. Explore bronzed cobblestone alleys and converted air-raid bunkers that speak stories of the past. Go back in time at Marienplatz, the city square where the town hall featuring gothic revival architecture showcases a glockenspiel clock in its dramatic façade. And then, there are the spectacular royal palaces of German monarchs, centuries-old churches, and expansive botanical parks that add elegance to Munich’s urban landscape. A sports hub, soccer fans will be delighted to watch matches at Allianz Arena, the home ground of FC Bayern!

Nuremberg
Nuremberg reminds you of a typical Bavarian village with its charming chalets and quaint canals. A city steeped in history, the formidable city walls and castle that have been restored after the Second World War stand testimony to its glorious past. Architectural wonders such as Lorenzkirche, Sebalduskirche, and the Heilig-Geist-Spital are some of the outstanding examples of structures from different eras that populate this beautiful city. Having witnessed the infamous war crimes tribunal Nuremberg Trials, the city has now moved on to become a fun and exciting place to explore with its toy museum, fountains, and a robust restaurant and bar scene. Visit the city around Christmastime when it hosts the famous annual market that is a treasure trove of handmade ornaments, gifts, and seasonal delicacies. A short drive from Nuremberg will take you to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Bamberg, which is also famous for its unusual smoked beer.

We returned a little over a week ago from our 11 day Germany adventure.
