Munich

The mere mention of Munich and one conjures up images of annual Oktoberfest gatherings where lederhosen and dirndl-clad women serve beer in large tankards! Although beer halls, including the 16th-century Hofbräuhaus and modern open-air beer gardens are commonplace, this wonderful capital of Bavaria that straddles the Isar river in southern Germany has a lot more to offer. Contemporary art quarters, plus automotive and comedy museums, stand next to the world’s best science and technology collections housed in heritage buildings. Explore bronzed cobblestone alleys and converted air-raid bunkers that speak stories of the past. Go back in time at Marienplatz, the city square where the town hall featuring gothic revival architecture showcases a glockenspiel clock in its dramatic façade. And then, there are the spectacular royal palaces of German monarchs, centuries-old churches, and expansive botanical parks that add elegance to Munich’s urban landscape. A sports hub, soccer fans will be delighted to watch matches at Allianz Arena, the home ground of FC Bayern!

Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a picturesque town nestled at the base of the Bavarian Alps in Germany. The town actually consists of two distinct villages– Garmisch and Partenkirchen. Garmisch is more modern and has a lively atmosphere, while Partenkirchen has a traditional Bavarian feel with its cobblestone streets and historic buildings. The town is particularly renowned for its natural beauty and breathtaking views, and serves as a gateway to Germany’s highest peak, the Zugspitze. It offers some of the best skiing in the country. You can also go hiking, mountain climbing and snowboarding. A gondola or cable-car ride is a good way to experience the richness of the surrounding landscape. The climate features a high number of sunny days and hardly any allergens, making it ideal as a health resort. Among the area’s notable landmarks is the Olympic Ski Stadium, which was used when the town hosted the 1936 Winter Olympics. It is also home to the Partnach Gorge, a deep gorge with wild waterfalls and dramatic rock faces. Two trails let you safely admire this dramatic natural phenomenon. There are also a number of restaurants and inns here that serve local Bavarian cuisine and are worth visiting.

Freiburg Im Breisgau

Freiburg Im Breisgau, or Freiburg, is the fourth-largest city in the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg. It is located on the banks of the Dreisam River in the western foothills of the Black Forest. The nearest major international airport is Zurich in Switzerland. Freiburg is more than 900 years old and one of the best things to do here is stroll through the pedestrian zone in the old town. It is full of historical buildings that will give you a glimpse into the city’s storied past. The most popular is the Freiburg Munster, or Freiburg Cathedral. Its 380 ft tall spire offers fabulous views over the city. Freiburg is also known as the ‘green city’ of Germany because of its ecological initiatives, such as the ‘Solar Settlement’ located in the Vauban district. This community is built on solar energy and is intended to generate more power than it consumes. You can use the city as a base from which to explore the Black Forest. Take a day trip out to The Schauinsland, a mountain that is a touch over 4,200 ft tall. The Schauinsland cable car, located a short bus or tram ride from the city center, will take you to the top for stunning panoramic views.

Zürich

Zürich has to be one of the prettiest and wealthiest cities of Europe, with the Limmat River and Lake Zürich running through it and the majestic Swiss Alps towering over it. While the old town (Altstadt) of Zürich is a gorgeous collection of lovingly preserved heritage buildings and old churches, modern Züri is a thriving financial center with a very lively nightlife. Zürich’s landmark 12th century cathedral of Grossmünster, the much older Fraumünster Church with its lovely stained-glass windows, the 17th century Rathaus (or town hall), and the Bahnhofstrasse or high street lined with boutiques and high-end restaurants are must-visits on any traveler’s list. Art lovers meanwhile have much to see at the Kunsthaus Zürich and the Rietberg Museum, the county’s largest museum of non-European cultures. The food scene in Zürich’s modern, industrialized part of town is worth exploring with its food markets, street stalls, popular food festivals, and fine dining restaurants. And let’s not forget that Switzerland’s largest city is the cheese, chocolate and fondue capital of the world!
