Delhi

Delhi, the capital of India, has a long and storied history that goes back 3,000 years. It is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, and has been the beating heart of many empires, from the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughals to the British. Each one has left its imprint on Delhi’s architecture, creating a varied and multicultural cityscape. Three UNESCO World Heritage sites span the centuries and are arguably the highlights. The 12th-century Qutub Minar is an early example of Delhi’s Islamic heritage. Humayun’s Tomb, built in the 16th century, features a garden mausoleum with a striking octagonal design. Finally, there is the iconic sandstone Red Fort, or Lal Quila, built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century. Today, Delhi is split between ‘Old Delhi’, with its narrow streets, bazaars, and historical monuments, and ‘New Delhi’, with its wide boulevards and grand government buildings. One thing they both have in common is delicious street food ranging from chaat and kebabs to flaky parathas, making Delhi a food lover’s paradise.

Once a vital stop on the historic Silk Road, the town’s architecture, cuisine, language and traditions bear witness to centuries of trade and cultural exchange between Central Asia and Tibet. In Leh, prayer flags flutter in the thin mountain air and locals greet visitors with warm smiles and cups of butter tea, creating an atmosphere that feels worlds away from the chaos of modern cities. Embark on a luxurious nomadic journey in breathtaking Ladakh! Stay four days at The Chamba Camp in Thiksey to explore the hidden treasures of the lush valley. On your first day, acclimatize to the higher altitude as you discuss your activity preferences with advice from the in-house specialist. Spend the morning of your second day soaking in your beautiful surroundings. Birdwatchers can set out early accompanied by a trained naturalist, and return for lunch at the camp. In the afternoon, travel to famous local sites, including the 17th century Leh Palace, Munshi House, old bazaar and the spectacular Shanti Stupa. Keep up your energy levels with steaming cups of butter tea! On your third day, start early for a visit to Thiksey Monastery and participate in the sunrise Morning Prayer rituals. Breakfast is served back at the campsite, after which you can explore the area on a bicycle or drive to the village of Saboo to meet the Oracle. Witness the imposing Hemis Monastery – the oldest Buddhist institution in Ladakh, in the afternoon. On your fourth day, awaken to the beautiful sights and sounds one last time, before leaving this delightful Himalayan valley.

Nubra Valley

Known for its orchards, scenic vistas, Bactrian camels and monasteries, Nubra Valley lies in the northernmost part of Jammu and Kashmir. Diskit is the capital of this tri-armed valley, north east of Ladakh. Known as the ‘Orchard of Ladakh’, scholars claim the original name was Ldumra or ‘Valley of Flowers’. Lying about 150 km north of Leh, the Shyok River meets the Siachan River to form this large valley separating the Ladakh and Karakoram Ranges. Situated about 10,000 ft above sea level, Nubra is surrounded by the brilliant snowcapped Himalayan ranges, and lies sandwiched between Tibet and Kashmir. During winter, the entire valley appears like the moon’s landscape; while in summer, it is lush green. A predominantly Buddhist region, there are several Buddhist learning centers. Ensa, Samstemling, Diskit and Hunder are noted Buddhist monasteries.

Enchanting Travels were very proactive in helping us put together our trip and their support during our trip was amazing. We travelled from Delhi to the Amritsar by train to see the Golden Temple and the Pakistan border flag ceremony. We flew to Udaipur and travelled by car via Deogarh, Jodhpur, Jaipur, Agra back to Delhi with an onwards flight to Jabalpur, followed by a car ride to the Bandhavgarh National Tiger Park. The holiday included a train trip and three internal flights, and everything went according to plan and without a hitch. There were too many highlights, but a special mention goes to the Diwali celebration with a local family, the Taj Mahal and the visit to the Bandhavgarh National Park where we saw tigers in the wild. We can say, hand on heart, that our holiday in India exceeded our expectations.
